Here you will find information about the Agriculture class offerings, FFA, and SAE's
Agricultural Education
Agricultural Education at Bruce School, as well as many other schools throughout the state and country takes three primary forms. The first of these form is Classroom Learning.
Bruce students are fortunate to be offered Ag. Classes in grades 6-12. In grades 6-8, students take 30 day Ag. Exploratory classes, and in grades 9-12 students can choose from a variety of 1-semester introductory and advanced topic based courses. Select high school level courses may also soon be available to fulfill science credit requirements, as well as college level credit requirements through advanced standing.
FFA is also an integral part of Ag Ed here at Bruce. FFA is the premier agriculturally based leadership organization. Our chapter, the Bruce FFA, is very active in events at the community, state, and local level. In FFA, students have nearly limitless opportunities to expand their leadership skills, as well as gaining exposure to the extremely varied facets of the agriculture industry and lifestyle. To be eligible to join the Bruce FFA, students must be in at least grade 7, and be enrolled at Bruce School, Ladysmith School, or be homeschooled within either of the two districts.
Supervised Agricultural Experiences or SAE's have had a varied history at Bruce. An SAE is simply any type of long term agricultural experience that a student takes part in. In order to count as an official SAE, the student must keep records of what they experience including, but not limited to hours spent, and money invested and earned. SAE's tend to fall within two major areas. The first area being placement. If a student works or volunteers for another person for their experience they are considered to be in a placement SAE. If the student has a self-directed experience, they are said to have an Entrepreneurship SAE. It is the eventual goal of the Bruce Ag. Program for every student in an Ag. class, or FFA to be involved in an SAE.
It is important to note in the three circle model above that all three forms of Ag. Education cross over each other. In any of the forms, students can expect to benefit from, as well as learn about the other forms in an effort to provide our students with the best, most well rounded education in agriculture possible.
